He is variously identified as the Prince (or Angel) of the Presence, as Michael the archangel, or as Enoch after his bodily ascent into heaven. He is commonly described as a celestial scribe recording the sins and merits of men, as a guardian of heavenly secrets, as God’s mediator with men, as the “lesser Yahweh,” as the archetype of man, and as one “whose name is like that of his master.”

Another hypothesis would derive Metatron from a combination of two Greek words, meaning after μετὰ and throne, θρóνος which, taken together, would suggest the idea of "one who serves behind the throne"

Some believers say that Metatron is one of only two angels (the other is Archangel Sandalphon) who was first a human being. It is believed he was the prophet Enoch from the Torah and the Bible before ascending to heaven and becoming an angel. Metatron's experience living on Earth as a person gives him a special ability to relate to people who want to connect with him.

Metatron as a mediator or priest between Israel and God. There is only one who can fill this role, and the Bible specifically states that that person is Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). Jesus intercedes for us as a high priest (Hebrews 4:14), and placing anyone else, human or angel, in that role is a dangerous deviation.

A second issue is the idea of Metatron being placed on a throne next to God’s throne. The Bible states multiple times that Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father (Hebrews 3:3). This again seems to be putting Metatron in the place of Jesus.
